Alexandria, VA, USA, June 22, 2022 – The International Association for Dental Research (IADR) announced that Sally Marshall, University of California San Francisco, USA, is the 2022 recipient of the IADR Gold Medal. Marshall was recognized during the Opening Ceremonies of the virtual 100th General Session & Exhibition of the IADR, held in conjunction with the 5th Meeting of the Asia Pacific Region on June 20-25, 2022.
Marshall, a UCSF professor since 1987, retired as the vice provost of academic affairs and director of the Office of Faculty Development and Advancement in 2013. She is distinguished professor emerita and recall professor of biomaterials and bioengineering in the Department of Preventive and Restorative Dental Sciences in the UCSF School of Dentistry. She is a former president of the IADR, the American Association for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research (AADOCR), and the Academy of Dental Materials. She is a Fellow of the AADOCR and the Academy of Dental Materials.
Marshall earned a Bachelor of Science degree and a PhD degree in materials science and engineering from Northwestern University. Her research interests center on structure-property relationships in calcified tissues, including modifications due to disease or use. Various imaging and X-ray techniques are used in the analyses.
The IADR Gold Medal is the highest recognition bestowed by the IADR. The IADR Gold Medal is presented to an individual who is a previous recipient of an IADR Distinguished Scientist Award (in any one of the current 17 categories) who has then built on their original scientific accomplishments to more broadly impact science, health research, or population health through expansion of their scientific field of inquiry into other disciplines or through higher administrative positions in academia, government, non-profit or private industry, or some combination thereof. IADR may award the Gold Medal annually, provided a suitable candidate is nominated.
